How to Use This Calculator

  1. Set your stake per part (total cost runs to 2× this figure)
  2. Set the win odds for your pick
  3. Pick the number of places on offer
  4. Pick the place fraction (1/4 or 1/5 of the odds)
  5. Read off returns and profit for the win, place-only, and unplaced cases

Formula

Total Stake = Unit Stake × 2 (one part for win, one for place)

Place Odds = (Win Decimal Odds - 1) / Fraction + 1

Win Return = (Stake × Win Odds) + (Stake × Place Odds)

Place Return = Stake × Place Odds

Win Profit = Win Return - Total Stake

Place Profit = Place Return - Total Stake

Frequently Asked Questions

Define an each-way bet.

It’s two bets at once: a win bet and a place bet. Win, and both parts pay. Place (finish in the top spots) without winning, and only the place part pays. The place part settles at a fraction of the win odds.

What do 1/4 odds and 1/5 odds refer to?

That’s the fraction of the win odds applied to the place return. At 1/4 odds, the place part settles at one quarter of the win odds; at 1/5, one fifth. So with win odds of 10/1 at 1/4, place odds are 10/4 = 5/2.

How many places get paid?

Varies by event. Horse racing usually pays 2-4 places, more in handicaps. The bookmaker states the place count and fraction for each event.

Does each-way offer value?

It can pay off well when a pick looks likely to place but carries high win odds. Longshots with solid place chances suit each-way best, particularly when the place terms are generous.
