Teaser

A parlay that lets you shift the point spread or total in your favor in exchange for reduced odds.

A teaser is a parlay variant that lets you move the point spread or total (over/under) a set number of points in your favor on every leg. The trade for that better line is a lower payout than a standard parlay at the original odds. Teasers are most common in NFL and NBA betting, where point-based scoring makes line shifts count.

Like any parlay, every leg must win for the teaser to pay. The difference is the built-in line advantage. Standard football teasers offer 6, 6.5, or 7 points; basketball offers 4, 4.5, or 5. More points means a lower payout, since each added point raises the win probability of every leg.

Example

Say you place a two-team, 6-point NFL teaser with a $50 stake:

  • Original line: Philadelphia Eagles -7.5 becomes Eagles -1.5 after the 6-point teaser adjustment.
  • Original line: Under 48.5 in the Rams vs. 49ers game becomes Under 54.5 after the adjustment.

A standard two-team, 6-point teaser typically pays around -110. If both adjusted legs win, your $50 bet returns about $95.45 ($45.45 profit). As a standard parlay at original odds, these two selections could return much more, but the teaser hands you a far higher win probability by moving each line 6 points your way.

Key Points

  • Points move in the bettor’s favor: The core feature is that spreads and totals shift to make each leg easier to hit.
  • Reduced payouts compared to standard parlays: Better lines cost you payout. More points teased, less the bet pays.
  • All legs must win: Same as a regular parlay – one losing leg sinks the whole teaser.
  • Most effective with key numbers in football: Sharp bettors tease through NFL key numbers like 3 and 7, since a high share of games land on those margins.
  • Push rules vary by sportsbook: Some books grade a push leg as a teaser loss; others drop the leg and recalculate. Check house rules before betting.
